With the Wave of Endorsements for Tinubu's Candidacy, Can He Indeed Win the 2023 Presidential Polls?

In recent weeks, there were speculations that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will not give its 2023 presidential ticket to its national leader, Bola Ahmed Tinubu for health reasons.

But all that seems forgotten now. The former Lagos State governor's London residence, where he is recuperating after undergoing treatment for a yet-to-be-disclosed illness, has become a political Mecca of some sort. Even as the who is who in the APC takes turns to visit him in London, he is also getting a wave of endorsements for the presidency at home.

On October 1, 2020, while the nation marked its Independence Day October, members of the northern caucus of the House of Representatives flew to the United Kingdom to visit the man who goes by many epithets and titles like the Lion of Bourdillion, Asiwaju of Lagos, and Jagaban Borgu In his London residence in an obvious show of support for his candidacy in the 2023 presidential election.

During the visit, the caucus pledged its unalloyed support for the Jagaban with one of them even heard addressing him as Mr. President in a video.

Meanwhile, some media reports have indicated that not less than 15 APC governors have declared their support for the famed undisputed godfather of Lagos and Southwest politics. They have also resolved to ensure that he emerges as the party’s presidential flag bearer for the 2023 polls.

The governors who are at the vanguard of the campaign for a Tinubu presidency in 2023, include those of Ondo, Lagos, Ekiti, Kano, Katsina, Kogi, and Osun states. Others are the governors of Zamfara, Niger, and Ogun states.

Other political bigwigs who have expressed their support for Tinubu's candidacy include Ishaq Abiola Ajumobi, Chief Segun Oni, Gbenga Daniel, serving cabinet ministers among others.

These men appear very committed to ensuring the emergence of Tinubu as the APC's presidential standard-bearer in the 2023 elections. For them, it is payback for the Asiwaju's investment in their political careers.

But the question must yet be asked about the sincerity of these endorsements and if indeed they are adequate to guarantee Tinubu's ascension to power in 2023.

Are the people behind the endorsements sincere or are they just playing politics as they seek to position themselves strategically for what they can get?

Time will tell indeed if these endorsements are genuine.

Meanwhile, before Tinubu gets to become Nigeria's President, he has to first win his party’s presidential primaries. That then will be the first test of these men's loyalty. But it is the easier test because it is well within their sphere of influence.

The bigger and tougher test comes with the general elections proper.

Will the current wave of endorsements translate to victory at the polls for the APC stalwart?

Time will tell!
