At 81, Baba Ajatta has remained a rallying figure in Oshodi Isolo Local Government Area in Lagos state. Joseph Jayeola Ajatta was a House of Representatives member who till date is seen a game changer. Although old, Baba Ajatta as he is popularly called is not only active but a reservoir of political history. He is regarded as the biggest achiever in constituency project execution.
Speaking to Rushhournews, Ajatta said he served the country when the emphasis was on touching the lives of people. “The constituency project was well intentioned for the benefit of the masses and truly touched the people positively.” He insisted that every national assembly member was desirous of implementing projects that the people can feel and connect with you.
Baba Ajatta said his projects totaling about 78 during his 8 year tenure spread across all the wards of the federal constituency. According to Ajatta, "we were never given the money to execute any project. All we did was to lobby for some projects like transformer, boreholes, toads etc. to be included in the budget for our constituencies. It was the ministry under which each of projects fell into that executed the projects." As an Hon. Member, yours is to monitor and ensure the projects were done for your people.
Unfortunately, if the situation is not the same now then that might have given the impression that the idea of constituency project was intended to enrich the lawmakers. Ironically, members of his constituency still crave for him to return to active politics and contest for any position of his choice. According to Ajatta,
“my people continue to pressure me to come and contest for a position of my choice, but I have done my bit. I only advice the ones that are coming behind me.”
Hon. Ajatta, a chattered accountant by profession who still runs a chattered consulting firm represented Oshodi Isolo federal constituency from 2003 – 2011 He was a former bank dirctor.
