3 Requests Buhari Made During The UN General Assembly

President Buhari had on Friday addressed the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, USA. During the event which featured many world leaders, Buhari had made several remarks some of which are requests that he tabled before the president of the UN General Assembly and the member states. Below are three requests made by Buhari as shared on the official account of Femi Adesina, the special adviser to the president on media and publicity, on Opera News:

1. Fairer and more equitable distribution of covid-19 vaccines to all countries.

While acknowledging the efforts of international communities in curbing the spread of coronavirus, Buhari demanded for fairer distribution of covid vaccines. Buhari said the rising wave of newer and more contagious strains makes this even more urgent. He stressed that no one is safe until everyone becomes safe.

2. Total elimination of all nuclear weapons. Buhari had opined that nuclear weapons are ultimate agents of mass destruction and as a result, disarmament of nuclear weapons should be the final objective of the United Nations.

3. Debts cancellation

President Muhammadu Buhari also asked world leaders to consider developing states facing fiscal and liquidity challenges for debt suspension including outright cancellation. Buhari had noted how the covid-19 pandemic added to the predicament facing developing and least developed countries. He then opined that debt cancellation is needed for countries facing the most severe challenges.
