This new warning was issued by the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) headed by Major General Babagana Monguna ahead of the governorship election in Anambra State. The Anambra election is scheduled to hold on November 6, 2021. Already, almost all the political parties hoping to contest the election have conducted their primaries and produced their candidates for the contest. According to a report by The Punch, the office of the NSA gave the warning during an Inter-Agency Consultative Committee meeting on Election Security held in Abuja. This article discusses main reasons why the federal government issued the new warning to the separatist groups.

The federal government wants to ensure a free, fair and peaceful election in Anambra. This is the major reason for the fresh warning to IPOB and other secessionist groups to avoid causing trouble in the southern part of Nigeria ahead of the Anambra poll. There have been series of secessionist activities in the South East with Anambra having its own share of it. In fact, IPOB members have sometimes vowed that they would not allow any election to hold in the South East. It means that if the federal government does not intervene to arrest the situation to foster peace, security challenges may disrupt the election.

Again, there have been series of attacks in the South East region by some criminal elements and others people suspected to be members of the separatist groups. Some of the attackers are suspected to be IPOB members while others are criminal elements that have been tagged Unknown Gun Men (UGM). They repeatedly attacked security formations and security agents thereby making South East to become troubled and unsafe to a great extent. The truth is free and fair election does not take place in a place where there is no peace. Although, the federal government deployed security agents to combat these criminal elements and degrade them thereby restoring relative peace in South East. Ahead of the Anambra poll, it becomes necessary that the separatist groups and others are warned to desist from attacks and other criminal activities in the region.

Moreover, the separatist groups have also attacked INEC facilities and destroyed key election materials. This is another reason why the federal government issued this fresh warning. It would be recalled that the separatist groups and the UGM had also attacked the offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)and destroyed key INEC materials in the process.

To avoid those attacks from affecting the Anambra election, INEC Chairman, Prof. Yakubu Mahmood revealed that they have embarked on the process of replacing the affected things to enable the commission to conduct the Anambra poll. It is necessary to prevent further attacks on INEC, its facilities or staff. That is also the main reason for the new warning.
