Governor Sanwo Olu Is Not From Lagos State - Kunle Uthman

As political parties and candidates in Lagos state prepare for the gubernatorial election in 2023, the race is heating up. But one thing that's come up is that the current governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, isn't actually from Lagos State, as claimed by the Social Democratic Party (SDP) gubernatorial candidate, Kunle Uthman.

Uthman claims that Sanwo-Olu does not originate from Lagos State, but rather from Ijebu-Mushin in Ogun State. Similarly, Uthman claims that Sanwo-deputy, Olu's Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, does not originate from Lagos State. In response to Uthman's revelation, many have expressed their shock and disbelief.

Uthman, however, argued that an indigenous leader with a deeper familiarity with the state's people was necessary for effective leadership. He worried that a governor who wasn't indigenous to the area would struggle to connect with and advocate for indigenous people.

Although Sanwo-family Olu's history begins in Ogun State, he spent his formative years in Lagos State. He received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Business Administration degrees from the University of Lagos, as well as his undergraduate and graduate education at other institutions in the state.

For over two decades, Sanwo-Olu has been an integral part of the political and administrative landscape of Lagos State. He has held positions as diverse as Commissioner for Establishment, Training, and Pensions; Commissioner for Commerce and Industry; and Managing Director/CEO of the Lagos State Development and Property Corporation.

As a result, while it is crucial to advocate for more indigenous leaders in Lagos State, it is also essential to recognize the work of non-natives who have made significant contributions to the state's development and progress. Although Governor Sanwo-Olu was not born in Lagos State, he has demonstrated a strong dedication to the growth and prosperity of the state. Hence, his candidacy should be judged on the merits of his work and not his place of birth.
