The national leader of the All Progresives Congress may need to make two concrete demands from the national leadership of the political party. The former Lagos State governor Bola Tinubu isn't around to monitor things and to work for his own ambition. He is in the United Kingdom and he may not be able to witness the APC state congresses.
Tinubu has helped to build the All Progressives Congress from scratch. He was actively and productively involved in the election that brought in Muhammadu Buhari. But unfortunately, he is not available in the country at a time the political party is moving towards the national convention or primary election. Hence, he should make the demands.
The national caretaker committee under Mai Mala Buni has fixed October 16 for the party's congresses in the 36 states of the country. And it should be noted that the state chairmen play several roles in the selection of the presidential candidate. They often lead delegates to the national convention.
Tinubu is supposed to be around to make sure that his key loyalists are elected in majority of the states most especially in the northern region. However, he js recuperating and he may not be able to leave London now to attend to the congresses. Yet he can ask that a particular number of his loyalists should be elected in the states.
Luckily enough for Tinubu, he has some allies in northern region. He has close associates in Kano State. Mr. Umar Ganduje is a good friend of Tinubu. Ganduje even led some persons to visit Tinubu in London. In a nutshell, Tinubu should demand that politicians who share from his dreams should be elected into the helm of APC affairs at the state level.
If the first demand is relatively impossible for the party to grant, Tinubu should specifically demand the ticket of the APC for the 2023 presidential election. Already analysts believe that he will most likely represent the APC in the 2023 poll. But the Northern Elders Forum and some other politicians have argued that north has rights to jostle for the seat.
Even a top APC senator, Abdullahi Adamu, has argued that zoning formula which is beint championed by southern politicians isn't constitutional. He is right, but Tinubu may not be able to confront northern leaders unless the ticket is zoned to the southern region.
Of course, it may start as a joke, but if Tinubu doesn't summon courage to make this particular demand, it will be surprising if Mr. Yahaya Bello, who is far less influential, picks up the ticket of the party and goes on to win the presidential election. It is a matter of time and it's quite possible.
