Two Ways Southern Members of PDP Can Beat their Northern Colleagues to Win 2023 Presidential Ticket

As the main opposition party in Nigeria, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) goes into her National Convention on Friday, October 30 and Saturday, October 31, 2021 one of the next political manipulations that may, probably, fill the political space of the party is, surely, the political calculations to determine who will emerge as the next presidential candidate of the opposition party in 2023.

According to a story published on the Vanguard, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is, keenly, considering option of throwing the presidential ticket of the party open in the 2023 presidential poll. With this option, considerably, interested politicians from both North and Southern parts of the country, who are registered members Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), will be able to pick the expression of interest and nomination forms to bear the flag of the party at the 2023 presidential elections.

Surely, some northern members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) could, reliably, be considered as prominent members of the opposition party who are viable, competent, formidable and qualified to vie for the presidential seat of Nigeria under the platform of the party.

However, there are agitations and demands by some members of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from the Southern part of Nigeria that the presidential power should be rotated to the South.

Interestingly, the members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) agitating for power rotation may have their reasons, if the opposition party mutually agree to throw the presidential ticket open, no section will have priority over other, in the course of picking the presidential candidate of PDP for the 2023 presidential poll.

However, there are two ways the Southern members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) can, strategically, take to outsmart their Northern counterparts from emerging as the next presidential candidate of the party.

One, the Southern members of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), mostly, all the southern states governors elected under the platform of PDP, political stalwarts and aspirants may need to set up a strong reconciliation committee.

The reconciliation committee should identify, resolve and unite every warring member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Southern part of the country. At least, large proportion of the members of PDP from the South should see themselves as one and approach the 2023 contest for the presidential ticket of PDP as one big, strong and united political family.

Secondly, members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from the Southern part of Nigeria should engage themselves in, heavy and sincere, political dialogue toward reaching a consensus presidential candidate before the party's primaries where the presidential candidate of PDP will be picked.

Endorsement of consensus presidential candidate by the Southern members of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will, surely, prevent votes splitting at the primaries and it will surely booster chances of the southern members of the party to, successfully, produce the 2023 Presidential candidate of the opposition party.
