They are the two major contending parties in the race seeking to win the election and run the affairs of the state. To be specific, it is a contest between the PDP's candidate, Governor Godwin Obaseki and the APC's candidate, Osagie Ize-Iyamu. Already the two parties have set up their various campaign teams. Each of the parties has a team of strong and experienced politicians. The teams are expected to lead each of the parties to the election with the mandate to achieve victory at the poll.
While the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike is the Chairman of the PDP Campaign Council for Edo State, the Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje heads that of the APC. Both Chairmen have been strategizing with their party and team members on how to hit the ground running. They have all been inaugurated amid fierce verbal exchange between Ganduje and Wike which added serious drama to the whole thing. It further gave a tip of the iceberg of what may come.
Meanwhile, the focus of this article is to discuss three strong politicians in Ize-Iyamu's campaign team that unsettle the PDP which is the major opponent of the APC. The three of them will pull their weights in their various ways and bring in their experience and other things they can offer towards achieving victory for Ize-Iyamu. That will depend on the kind of defense the PDP will put up on the D-Day. Let the see politicians be discussed.
(1). Abdullahi Ganduje: Ganduje is a second term Governor of Kano State. He is a staunch member of the APC and an ally of President Muhammadu Buhari. Gandjue has been a Deputy Governor before eventually becoming the Governor. That adds to his years of political experience. Nigerians can remember the stiff opposition Ganduje faced in Kano and he eventually won.
Most importantly, Ganduje faced serious challenge in the 2019 governorship election when he contested for second term. His major contender Abba Yusuf of the PDP put up a strong fight. In fact, the election had to be declared inconclusive amid violence and tensed political atmosphere. Ganduje maintained that he was going to win despite all the early challenges. As someone who knows the game well, he proved a point. At the end of it all, Ganduje won the election. He also won in court up to the Supreme Court.
Now, the APC made Ganduje the Chairman of its Campaign Council for Edo Governorship election with Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State as his Deputy. It means that the party believed that Ganduje will do the same thing in Edo. The party is confident that he will lead the team to achieve victory for Ize-Iyamu. During the inauguration of the team, Ganduje assured that they knew everything PDP might have plotted to do. He added that he and his team would outsmart the PDP and win the election. Ganduje unsettled the PDP after making some other comments on that day. His conspicuous presence in the APC campaign team still unsettles the PDP somehow. As the Chairman of the team, Ganduje has more feathers to his nest to do more for the APC.
(2). Adams Oshiomhole: The presence of the immediate past National Chairman of the APC in the team unsettles the PDP and Obaseki. Oshiomhole had started the work since. He was the APC helmsman when Obaseki was disqualified amid certificate accusations. All along, it was said that Oshiomhole was backing Ize-Iyamu to emerge the candidate of the APC and that eventually happened despite the fact that Oshiomhole was under suspension at the that time. So, he has made some significant contributions to achieve victory for Ize-Iyamu already.
As a former Governor of Edo State for two terms who later became the National Chairman of the APC, Oshiomhole is no small factor in Edo State politics. He knows the corners and has loyalists. His camp in Edo will be useful in the election. Although, he is a member of the campaign team, it does not stop him from doing big things to achieve victory for the APC. Before now, Oshiomhole never liked the PDP and he would like to stop Obaseki to prove a strong political point. Even if helping the APC win the Edo election will be one of the last achievements he would make for the party, Oshiomhole will like to do that. Oshiomhole is a strong force that unsettles the PDP ahead of the election.
(3). Yahaya Bello: The Kogi State Governor also had a tough time in his political journey. He is a second term Governor of the Confluence state. He has been lucky all along. Although, winning his second term was a very challenging experience. But he won after a tough battle with Musa Wada of the PDP who was his major opponent in the election. Despite all the violence and controversies that characterized the election, Bello emerged winner. Bello is also a strong loyalist of Buhari and that has always helped him in his political voyage.
Well, Bello threw his weight behind the APC and promised that the party will win the Edo election. He is strongly behind the party and will work for the victory of the Ize-Iyamu on the day of the election. Bello can pull serious weight in the team. He never hid his loyalty to the APC in recent times. Bello is also bold, young and seems to understand the game very well.
So, the trio of Ganduje, Oshiomhole and Bello are people that give the PDP serious concern ahead of the Edo State election. They will like to help Ize-Iyamu to unseat Obaseki on September 19, 2020 which is the D-Day for the clash.
Although, it is believed that Wike is a good match for Ganduje, time will tell. Wike and his team will need to contend with these three politicians and other members of the APC campaign team. The stage is set. Nigerians are watching to see whis team wins. Do you think team Wike for Obaseki will win or team Ganduje for Ize-Iyamu will win?
