The People's Democratic Party has one issue that is still not clear as it prepared for the very important national convention which would come up later this month. Although preparations seem to be ongoing, it is not clear yet how the party would go with some sundry matters.
Initially, the party decided that the southwest region should produce the next chairman of the party. There was no specific reason given and it is apparent that the party performs woefully in the southwest. Mr. Ayodele Fayose has been connected to the seat.
But as the party is drawing closer to its convention, the PDP governors have agreed that the next chairman should come from north. The Punch Newspaper reported that the committee led by the Enugu State Governor brought its recommendation on the issue of the issue of zoning of the key seats within the party.
The committee concluded that the north and south should swap the seats they currently occupy. Note that Mr. Uche Secondus, the former chairman is from south-south region. And the implication of the recommendation is that north would produce the chairman.
The issue on ground now is that what exactly would be the position of the National Executive Council of the party over the issue of national chairman? It is not clear yet whether the party would settle for the first decision which was to pick the national chairman from southwest or go for the lateset one.
The Enugu State Governor said that the recommendation would be presented to the National Executive Council which has power to ratify decisions. The PDP NEC would be in a bit of confusion on the matter. Now it is not clear how the party would go about it.
The second issue is that the party would be confused about the ticket for the 2023 presidency. Actually, the zone or region that picks the national chairmanship can't have the presidential ticket at the same time. The norm is that the two key slots would be shared by the north and the south.
With the resolution of the PDP governors, the northern leaders may be stopped from picking up the party ticket for the race. Mr. Atiku Abubakar, who is ambitious, may automatically be screened out of the race. And there is no other politician who may outsmart Atiku Abubakar in the PDP at this moment.
Let's assume that the NEC agrees to zone its national chairmanship to north, would the same north be allowed to nominate the presidential candidate? Remember that when the northern governors met in Kaduna, they disagreed with the their colleagues in south. The two issues remain difficult for the party to resolve while it is preparing for the convention.
