The Presidency has stated that President Muhammadu Buhari's reference to Lagos when speaking about the future of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has nothing to do with the party's stalwart, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.
When asked about the APC's future plans during an interview with Arise TV, the President stated, "The hope of this administration is to see the APC last beyond 2023..." As a result, we should let the party decide. You can't, for example, sit in Lagos and decide the fate of the APC. With the registration of membership cards, the party's rebuilding has begun from the bottom up. Every member of the group must participate.
"The Presidency wishes to disassociate President Buhari from a vicious campaign aimed at driving a wedge between him and a strong ally, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu," the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garaba Shehu, said in a statement on Thursday 10th of June 2021.
“This is nothing more than a sly attempt to pull the President into a squabble. Our folks, particularly APC members, should not fall for this. "
"Because the ruling party, the APC, is a popular political party owned by its whole membership, unlike others before it, Mr. President emphasized during the 45-minute discussion that neither he nor anyone in the leadership could impose their will on the party."
After President Buhari's interview with Arise TV, some Nigerians on social media mocked Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, saying that the president's statement was targeted at him. According to some, President Buhari used and dumped Tinubu. Others believe Buhari's statement indicates that the APC will not zone its presidential ticket in the South West for 2023.
The absence of the former governor at the commissioning of the Lagos-Ibadan railway in Lagos on Thursday 10th of June 2021, also raised concern on social media. Prominent Nigerians were present as President Buhari commissioned the elephant project in Lagos. The reason why Tinubu was absent from the event has not been revealed to the public.
