Is Obaseki Afraid Of Oshiomhole's Return To Edo? Here Is Why The Odds Are In His Favour (Opinion)

The mammoth crowd that came to welcome the former Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhmole when he returned to his home state Edo is one many people have said should worry Godwin Obaseki. The former President of NLC was welcomed by a large supporters of APC even Okada riders from the pictures I saw yesterday. The September 19 Governorship election is 2 months from now. Oshiomhole whom many have said that his influence is highly needed in Edo State if APC must win. I have pondered on it. I reflected on what happened in 2007 Governorship election in Edo when Oshiomhole took the PDP by surprise to pull a large crowd even without having any godfather then and also running under a political party that was then like a 'baby' in Edo State. He surprised everyone when the supreme court delivered a judgement in 2008 stating that he won the election. To me Oshiomhole is a grass root politician in Edo State any day anytime. But I don't think the incumbent Governor Godwin Obaseki is afraid of his much celebrated return to Edo.

People who have followed the political development in Edo will agree with me that this election is not between Obaseki and Ize-Iyamu. Rather between Obaseki and Oshiomhole. Their political romance that went sour has made them decide to part their ways and test their popularity among the people of Edo State. To me the odds are in favor of Obaseki as far as this September 19 Governorship election is concerned.

Here are my reasons;

His Disqualification From The APC Primary Screening

Obaseki who was cleared by APC in 2016 was disqualified by the same party in 2020. This has earned him the sympathy of Edo people who know how the scene of " The hand of Esau and the voice of Jacob" played in the screening committee. 

The South South Factor

All the South South states are PDP states except Edo until Obaseki defected. The South South Governors are united in making sure that APC is kicked out of the zone this time around. That's why Wike who survived intimidations from the opposition in 2019 and still won his reelection is leading Obaseki's campaign.

His Developmental Projects

Last time I saw the opinion poll in Edo, the people are happy with him and ready to vote for him again. 

The Unity In PDP

PDP aspirants stepped down for Obaseki. They have also pledged to work for him especially Kenneth who vowed not to step down for Obaseki. He knows that Edo Central where he comes will take their turn after Obaseki.

His Deputy And Running Mate's Influence In Edo North

Edo North where Oshiomhole comes from is the strongest hold of APC in Edo State. Philip Shaibu the Deputy Governor of Edo State and Obaseki's running is from there. His influence will count for his boss. That was why Obaseki insisted that he will run with him. The September 19 Governorship election will be tough in Edo State but the odds are in favor of Obaseki.
