Apparently, Mr. Doyin Okupe is the first top PDP politician to indicate his readiness to pick up the ticket of the party. As reported by the Punch Newspaper, the former spokesperson would like to win the ticket of the PDP which would ultimately allow him to vie for the office of the president of the country. However, he may not be able to beat three top politicians of the party.
The last PDP primary election in Port Harcourt was mainly among three politicians namely Aminu Tambuwal, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president and Mr. Bukola Saraki, a former Kwara State governor. It was a serious political battle and now that Doyin Okupe has declared his own ambition, he may have to fight for his vision.
There have been rumours that Jonathan would be back in the race. The former president is avoiding the topic even though there is hardly a day without a reference to him and the possibility that he would contest for the seat which he left in 2015. If he contests again, he will surely stop Doyin Okupe.
Of course, Okupe knows that Jonathan remains his boss. Okupe served as a presidential spokesperson when Jonathan was in power. And if the former president shows his interest in the People's Democratic Party ticket, Okupe would have to mellow and bow for his former principal at the presidential villa.
Nyesom Wike has struggled a lot for the PDP. He talks about the party and he is always ready to defend the overall interests of the opposition party. He remains a solid member of the political party. Of course, he wouldn't be doing so much for the party if he doesn't have interests in the higher office.
The clash he had with Uche Secondus can be explained. Perhaps Mr. Wike wanted to clear any obstacle to his own ambition. Definitely, if he can ensure that Secondus is removed from office, he can use whatever methods to make the party give him the ticket for the 2023 presidential election.
Mr. Atiku Abubakar is one of the silent politicians. He may catch every other person unawares and swiftly scoop the ticket. He hasn't talked about the race, but it is all over him that he wants to lead the country. He has been working on ruling the federation without any particular success yet.
He recently went to reconcile with the Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike few months ago in Port Harcourt. The development was seen as a possible move towards the 2023 presidential race. Of course, Mr. Abubakar knows what to do and he will surely stop Doyin Okupe if he (Atiku) contests for the PDP ticket.
