[Opinion] Goodluck Jonathan’s Rumoured Defection Plan, And Bola Tinubu' 2023 Presidential Ambition

It is no longer a secret, that there are rumours making rounds in the media, that some powers within the All Progressives Congress (APC), are plotting to bring in Nigeria’s one-time President, Goodluck Jonathan, to the party. It should be recalled that constitutionally, after serving for only a term, the former President could still rule the country for another term.

Arguably, this cannot be totally separated from the reasons behind the alleged plot to bring him back. It should be recalled that amid the debate over the region that should produce the next President of Nigeria, the North has argued that it has 4 more years to rule before power could be returned to the South. However, the claim is being weakened by the fact that the incumbent President is from the region.

With the debate over the region where the next President of Nigeria should come from, and the fact that the incumbent President is from the Northern region, there are chances that the APC, could consider zoning its 2023 presidential ticket to the South. However, the big question is, who exactly from the South should the cabal back to emerge as Nigeria’s next President.

It is no longer news that the National Leader of the party, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is nursing the ambition of succeeding President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023. Recently, there have been rumours that some powers within the APC, are working against his 2023 presidential ambitions. This is coming at a time when the North believes that it has 4 more years to rule before power could be returned to the South region.

With the incumbent President being a Northerner, and the likelihood that failure to zone the 2023 Presidency to the South could crack-up the APC, it can be argued that the North may opt for Goodluck Jonathan who can only rule for a maximum of 4 years, giving the North another opportunity to take over power for the next 8 years. This could have serious consequences for Bola Tinubu’s 2023 presidential ambitions.

There is no doubt that the APC National Leader has followers from both regions of the country. However, with Goodluck Jonathan seemingly the most favourable option for the North, there are chances that Bola Tinubu could lose some of his supporters from the region to the former President. This could affect his chances of actualizing his 2023 presidential ambitions.

Arguably, if Goodluck Jonathan eventually defects to the APC, as being rumoured, there are equally chances that many APC chieftains from the South, would also opt for him ahead of the party’s National Leader. This could bring Bola Tinubu’s dreams of securing the APC ticket, to an end, and perhaps, his 2023 presidential ambition.
