Lagos pays N1.3bn to another set of retirees.

The Lagos State Government has paid, more than N1 billion into the Retirement Savings Account of 246 retirees in the state’s public service for October.

Mr. Babalola Obilana, Director-General, Lagos State Pension Commission, made the disclosure in a statement on Sunday in Lagos.

“A total of one billion, three million, three hundred and seventy-four thousand, three hundred and seventy-two Naira, sixty-eight kobo was paid,” Obilana said.

He explained that the beneficiaries included employees from the mainstream service, Local Government Service, State Universal Basic Education Board, Teaching Service Commission, and other parastatals of the state government.

According to him, Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has consistently paid the monthly entitlements of retirees and backlog of some unpaid pension inherited from previous administrations.

The director-general congratulated all the retirees for rendering meritorious service to the state.

Obilana said that in spite of the state of the nation and aftermath of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the state government in line with the vision of a greater Lagos and its commitment to financial freedom for the state’s retirees ensured the payment of pension entitlements.

“This shows the commitment of Gov. Sanwo-Olu to the welfare of the pensioners in the state,” he said.

The director-general enlightened the retirees on the two payment options available for accessing their monthly pension entitlements which is the Programme Withdrawal and Life Annuity.

He urged the retirees to understand the details of the two options and choose the most appropriate option suitable for their situation.

Unknown Disease Kills 15 In Delta Communities.

Not less than 15 persons have been killed by an unknown disease in Ute Okpu and Idumesa communities in Ika North- East Local Government Area of Delta State.

Indications revealed that the ravaging epidemic which started about two weeks ago has led to the mysterious death of over a dozen persons in the neighboring communities.

Hence, Delta State Government has expressed concern over the mysterious deaths persons in both communities while assuring residents that Government would do everything possible to curb the disease.

The Delta State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Mordi Ononye gave the assurance yesterday when he led a team of public health officials to Ute Okpu in Ika North-East Local Government Area, with the view to unravel the mysterious disease that has claimed the lives of over 15 persons within 18 to 25 years age bracket in the past 2 weeks.

According to Ononye, “Delta State Government has received information on seemingly mysterious deaths in Ute Okpu and Idumesa communities of Ika North East Local Government Area of the State which prompted the Governor, His Excellency, Senator (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa, to direct the State Ministry of Health to immediately investigate these deaths, identify the cause/causes and effect containment measures”.

He said that the Governor has given directive to upgrade the Comprehensive Health Center in Ute -Okpu to a full fledged Hospital.

He then called on members of the community and residents of the State to observe good hygiene as the dry season approaches by properly covering their food, cutting grasses around their surroundings.

Couple married for 72 years die same day in Ogun state.

In what seemed a myth but a reality occurred at Abeokuta, Ogun, as Pa Israel Akojede and his wife, Mama Esther both died few hours apart having lived together in marriage for 72 years.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that their demise which occurred at Gbonagun Obantoko area of Abeokuta, had Pa Akojede reported dead around 3 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 30, while his beloved wife died a few hours later having got the news of her husband’s death.

Pa Akojede, was 103 years, while Mama was 98 years,

The first son of the family aged 70, Mr Joseph Akojede, who confirmed the deaths, said that though the incident remained a mystery to the family, but that it was expected because of the fondness between them.

“Their death is shocking but also expected. What we are thinking is maybe there would have been a short interval because they both loved themselves dearly.

“I have watched them since I was young and I know they are inseparable, they wear same colour of clothes, have the same belief and always consulted each other for advice.

“You can hardly hear them grumbling against each other as mama will say whatever her husband did was final, she won’t give a second opinion even if she had any.

“Such was the love they shared. Papa died very early in the morning and as we were being careful about breaking the news to his wife, she already knew and few minutes later she gave up the ghost,’’ he said.

We're bent on 2023 presidency- Ohanaeze.

Apex socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has said the Southeast zone is not relenting in getting the presidential ticket in 2023.

The group says part of its strategy is the planned letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, the All Progressives Congress and the People’s Democratic Party to that effect.

Ohanaeze maintained the two top political parties should cede their presidential tickets to the Southeast

The Chairman of Igbo World Assembly IWA and Ohanaeze Chairman Overseas, Dr Nwachukwu Anakwenze, told The Nation Sunday in Awka that Igbo were ready to make the 2023 a reality.

He said the zone had all it takes to make Nigeria great again, adding Ohanaeze was working in tandem with the other ethnic groups in the country to make it work.

He said Ohanaeze was working with ‘Who is Who ‘ in Igbo land on the project with other eggheads from other zones.

He maintained that what Nigeria needed on the long run was true federalism which, according to him, was a system of government based upon democratic rules and institutions in which the power to govern was shared between National and regional governments.
