Senate spokesman Ajibola Basiru in a statement on Sunday said the report that the Senate has ordered INEC to organise a referendum to help it decide if it will honour the clamour of Nigerians to create 20 more states is a gross mispresentation of what truly transpired.
The Senate Spokesperson while admitting that the Senate have received multiple requests to create new states insisted that the Constitution Review Committee actually said that it was not in its place to order the creation of new states.
The Senator said rather, the Committee recommended that the requests for states creation should be turned over to INEC only after two-thirds of Representatives and Senators from the affected areas have affirmed that they want a creation of new states.
Afterwards, INEC can then be instructed to organize a referendum in the affected states to determine if they want a creation of new states or not. This the spokesperson said was in compliance with Section 8 of the 1999 Constitution as amended.
Senator Ajibola Basiru therefore clarified that INEC is not being ordered to have a referendum on state creation.
