News has emerged from the camp of the Peoples Democratic Party that the Northern caucus is not happy with the decision to zone the party's Chairmanship slot to the North.

According to a report in Tribune Newspaper, some of the Northern PDP bigwigs are now making a last-minute effort to force the party to change the zoning plan to the South, in order to favour a Northern candidate emerging as the party's flagbearer in 2023.

What are their plans, and how do the Northern PDP bigwigs hope to carry it out? That will be the focus of this article.

They are playing up fears that PDP may lose Northern voters if it fields a southern candidate

Ahead of the National Executive Committee meeting holding on Thursday, the Northern bigwigs are mobilising their caucuses to force PDP to change the chairmanship slot to the South, in a bid to favour Northern Presidency. The NEC is expected to ratify the zoning decision during its meeting in a bid to make room for the sale of forms to interested candidates.

But the northern caucus is mobilizing against the ratification of the zoning decision. Their strategy is to draw the attention of the party leaders to the immediate and long implication of the existing zoning plan, adding that the party may not win the election with a southern candidate.

Looking at the issue strategically, the Northern caucus might have a point here because the North has the biggest voting population in Nigeria. In essence, any party that the Northern voters support is most likely to win.

But the problem is that Northern voters are not likely to support a Southern candidate. That means PDP stand a chance of losing a major opportunity to win the election if it goes ahead to zone its presidency to the South.

Another crucial point is that the ruling All Progressives Congress may zone its Presidential ticket to the South, so this offers a big opportunity for PDP to harvest APC's massive Northern supporters.

Of course, the South will put up strong opposition to the move by the northern PDP plans, which might create some confusion. But analysts have said that the party might resolve the crisis by throwing the presidential ticket contest open so that Northern candidates can also join the race.
