Breaking: Buhari finally wades into NDDC saga, orders speedy probe into commission's activities.

- Governor Wike on Thursday, July 16, rescued the ex-NDDC MG, Joy Nunieh, from being arrested

- Buhari, however, ordered a speedy probe into NDDC's activities.

Amid the crisis rocking the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), President Muhammadu Buhari has given directives for better coordination among security and investigating agencies with the National Assembly to bring about sanity in the system.

Nigerian Tribune reports that the president urged the concerned stakeholders to ensure that the administration’s effort to bring transparency and accountability to the management of the large number of resources dedicated to the development of the Niger Delta sub-region is not derailed.

In an information gathered that this was disclosed in a statement issued by the senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, Garba Shehu, in Abuja on Thursday, July 16.

He said the president was reacting “to the unfolding drama, which includes attacks and counter-attacks between and around persons, institutions, and the NDDC.”

Shehu said President Buhari expressed his strong determination to get to the root of the problem undermining the development of the Niger Delta and its peoples in spite of enormous national resources voted year after year for this singular purpose.

The statement added that the auditing firms and investigative agencies working in collaboration with National Assembly committees to resolve the challenges in the NDDC must initiate actions in a time-bound manner and duly inform the presidency of the actions being taken.

Shehu further stated that the president also directed timely sharing of information and knowledge in a way to speedily assist the administration to diagnose what had gone wrong in the past and what needs to be done to make corrections in order to return the NDDC to its original mandate of making life better for people in Niger Delta.

President Buhari said the administration wants to bring about “rapid, even and sustainable development to the region.”

It said President Buhari gave a firm assurance that his administration would put in place a transparent and accountable governance framework, not only in the NDDC but in all other institutions of government.

Meanwhile, had previously reported that following his intervention in the alleged police invasion of Nunieh's residence, the Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike, has explained that he took the action to save her from abduction.

It was reported that Wike, in a statement by the commissioner for information and communication, Paulinus Nsirim, called on the Inspector-General of Police, Muhammad Adamu, to immediately investigate the saga.

He said it was expedient to probe why over 50 armed policemen stormed the Port Harcourt residence of Nunieh at 4 am on Thursday, July 16.
