One Southern Politician Northerners May Support For 2023 Poll

The northern region has talked that it would love to rule the country. Even the Northern Elders Forum and key other leaders of the region have unequivocally said that zoning formula isn't recognised by the constitution. Meanwhile, the people of the region would still like to support one particular politician if he shows up for the job.

There have been debates on the matter. Even a top senator from Nassarawa State, Mr. Abdullahi Adamu, specifically said that the zoning formula being championed by the southern leaders isn't constitutional. Hence, he said that there would be nothing like zoning of the ticket. He echoed the same view of Mr. Ahmed Sani Yerima and Yahaya Bello, both of whom have said they would struggle for APC ticket.

Amidst all these debates, the northern governors and elders may be ready to accept Mr. Goodluck Jonathan as the next president of the country. Note that Jonathan has not made any declaration about the 2023 presidential election. But if he comes out, he may be the only southern politician that the whole of north and its leaders may accept.

Remember that Mr. Babangida Aliyu recently revealed that Jonathan lost the north in 2015 because the governors didn't support him. But the situation and narrative may totally change this time around. Even the northern leaders most especially the governors may be glad to throw their weights behind the former president.

There are two reasons the northern governors and elders would want to have Jonathan on the corridor of power again. The first important reason is that Jonathan can only spend four years in the office again. The constitution won't allow him to contest for more than once again.

And Jonathan is from Bayelsa State (south-south geopolitical zone). The implication of this is that if Jonathan competes and wins, he will have to hand over power to a northern politician who will almost certainly spend eight years. At the end of the day, the northern region would be happy with the arrangement.

The second reason may not be as convincing as the first one. But the northern elders would consider the fact that Jonathan ensured a smooth and uninterrupted transition of power in 2015. He lost the presidential election to the incumbent leader and he accepted defeat in a good fate. It was surprising that Jonathan picked up his telephone and called Muhammadu Buhari to congratulate the then APC candidate.

The Nigerian voters talked with their votes in 2015. Of course, electoral violence is rampant in Africa. But Jonathan didn't allow his loss in the poll to cause any issue. Hence, the northern leaders may be glad to pay him back. In a nutshell, it is true that the northern region would give southern politicians some tough time, but Jonathan may be accepted by the powerful leaders in north.
