State of Emergency: Buhari regime backs Malami, says IPOB bigger threat than bandits

Attorney General Abubarkar Malami is expected to declare a state of emergency in Anambra, according to the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

The administration also dismissed complaints of the action, arguing that the threats presented by separatist agitators IPOB were far more serious than those posed by criminals in the north.

On Thursday, Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed shared this sentiment.

“In the previous few weeks, IPOB has forced individuals to stay at home, refusing to allow them to go to schools or marketplaces, and there have also been high-profile killings.

"The AGF stated yesterday that the government will do everything possible to restore law and order in Anambra and the rest of the South East, ensuring that democratic symbols and pillars are not tampered with.

"One of the pillars of democracy in the state is the next election."

"Those who are criticizing the AGF on this, have they considered what will happen if the election in Anambra State does not take place on November 6?" Mr. Mohammed enquired.

Mr Malami stated on Wednesday that if the security situation in Anambra did not improve, the Buhari administration would declare a state of emergency.

Willie Obiano, the governor of Anambra, branded such suggestions as "unfortunate" after his meeting with Mr Buhari on Thursday. He said that northern states that had seen more violence had not been threatened with a state of emergency declaration.

However, the information minister believes that the current scenario in Anambra is not comparable to that in bandit-infested states such as Zamfara, Kaduna, and Katsina.

Mr Mohammed argues that it is a deceptive argument to claim that they have killed more people in Katsina, Zamfara, and Kaduna than they have in Anambra.

"What is taking place in Katsina, Zamfara, Kaduna, and Niger is criminal activity, which the government would not tolerate."

The minister also stated that the government would not hesitate to declare a state of emergency in Zamfara, Katsina, and Kaduna States if necessary.
