Popular lawyer and political analyst Segun Adebanjo has come out to explain why he believes INEC Chairman Professor Mahmud Yakubu should swiftly grant the request being made by the Labour Party candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, for the electoral umpire to have its Resident Election Commissioner (REC) removed.
Recall that Rhodes-Vivour accused Mr. Agbaje of conspiring with the state's ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to intimidate and suppress voters who turned out in large numbers to exercise their right to vote in the state while speaking to journalists shortly after the presidential elections that were held last weekend. He then requested that he be redistributed prior to the governorship elections since Lagosians no longer had faith in the REC, according to the National Chairperson of the Commission, Professor Mahmud Yakubu.
Adebanjo demanded that the INEC Chairman comply with the Labour Party's request to have Mr. Agbaje removed in response to Gbadebo's comments made during an interview on ARISE TV's "This Week" program earlier. Adebanjo did this in response to Gbadebo's comments. Before the gubernatorial elections, the eminent attorney asserts that the country's electoral umpire must reestablish Nigerians' confidence.
According to him, "What INEC is doing to regain Nigerians' confidence in the run-up to Saturday's polls is the crucial question. I've read in the press that the Labour Party's nominee for governor of Lagos, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has urged Buhari and the INEC Chairman to remove the organization's commissioner in Lagos State. As a result, we anticipate that people's actions will speak louder than their words if they lack faith in a process. Hence, all Commissioners and Returning Officers must be replaced at a minimum, as this is what we demand from INEC."
"You transfer them to another state and have them replaced if people believe that the commissioners and officers in their states have been compromised. Allow the people of Lagos to observe that the election umpire who presided over the previous vote and was reportedly corrupt has been removed and replaced. With Nigerians' faith in the voting process restored, the INEC Chairman will be able to"
