Opinion: How direct primaries may help Atiku defeat Wike & Peter Obi to grab PDP ticket in 2023

Ahead of the 2023 presidential election, there are a lot of permutations going on as the influential political players in different political parties try to grab the presidential ticket of their parties for the presidential race.

On the platform of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, some influential politicians like former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar from northeast, Governor Nyesom Wike from south-south, and former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi from southeast have all been tipped to fly the flag of PDP in 2023.

However, available indicators have shown that former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, may likely defeat Peter Obi snd Nyesom Wike to emerge as the presidential candidate of PDP.

The recent adoption of direct primaries by the Senate may likely help Atiku to emerge as the PDP presidential candidate.

The Senate had on Tuesday approved an amendment to the Electoral Act which would now make political parties elect their candidates for elections through direct primaries. President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to sign the bill into law before the next election.

During direct primaries, there are no delegates involved. With the new development, during presidential primaries, it will be held in all the wards across the country to allow registered members of the party to elect the presidential candidate.

This new development may likely help Atiku Abubakar who hails from the north to grab the presidential ticket of PDP.

The population of PDP members from 19 northern States may likely work for Atiku and help him to defeat southern politicians to emerge as PDP presidential candidate.

Recall that the direct primaries will be held in all the wards across the country, the population of PDP members who support Atiku in the northern region may help him to win the PDP presidential primaries.

Atiku Abubakar has much influence in the northern region, it would be easy to get the support of the registered members of the party from the region.

Apart from his much influence in the northern region, Atiku also has political networks in the southern region, this is why the new development may likely make it easy for him to win the PDP presidential primaries.
