The former vice president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, can now calm down as the PDP made some decisions relating to internal party matters, and 2023 elections. The party has decided to let the northern region produce the chairman of the party. And the party wants an open contest for the 2023 presidential race. Meanwhile, Atiku Abubakar needs to avoid a mistake.
Of course, Atiku Abubakar has not made any commitments to the 2023 general elections. But the fact that he said that zoning shouldn't determine who becomes the chairman of the party shows he still keeps his eyes on the top seat of the job. He was closer to it in 2019 when he slugged it out with President Muhammadu Buhari.
The national convention of the party would come first and the primary election wouldn't hold until next year barring all unforseen circumstances. And as the convention is getting closer, the former vice president needs to avoid a mistake while considering the PDP chairmanship aspirants.
Mr. Atiku should be free to anoint or endorse any politician he wants. But in the process of doing that, he doesn't have to pick anyone from the northeastern region. The flag bearer of the PDP in the 2019 presidential election needs to be careful and he shouldn't look while a politician from the geopolitical zone emerges as the chairman of the party.
Of course, the PDP would pick its chairman from north. And the northeastern region may have an upper hand on the ground that three states in the zone are under the PDP. Out of six states, the PDP has Bauchi, Taraba and Adamawa. Mr. Bala Mohammed, Mr. Darius Ishaku and Mr. Ahmadu Fintiri are PDP governors in the region.
The former vice president ought to know the implication of allowing a top politician from northeastern region to occupy the seat of the PDP chairman. Meanwhile, if he doesn't know, the PDP would be hesitant to allow one geopolitical zone out of six (north center, northeast, northwest, southeast, southwest and south-south) to take both the chairmanship and presidential ticket.
Actually, the PDP has thrown the presidential race open and any interested person can vie for it. But the politicians at the other five zones would be bothered that a zone takes the presidential ticket and the chairman's seat. Hence, top PDP leaders would work to stop Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
It would be a mistake for him to either support a politician from northeastern region or watch while the party elects a northeastern politician. Hence, the former president should avoid this mistake.
