Obansanjo who was the first military ruler in Africa hand over power to a civilian government. He served as Nigeria's military ruler (1976–79) and, as a civilian, as president (1999–2007).
He served as a president in the year 1999 to 2007,as a president he made some notable contributions to Nigeria. To enhance Nigeria literacy level, he introduced Universal Basic Education (UBE). Also, he created Niger Delta Development Commission. He reformed pension and established the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) and Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
He also introduced the Global System of Mobile (GSM). This was after the mobile technology was already existing in neighbouring countries like Benin, Togo, and Ghana. Additionally, he secured debt pardons for Nigeria from the Paris and London Club. Also he initiated extensive privatization programme of public enterprises
The military coups were the first actions that created division in our country. The same unity that Obasanjo’s generation claimed they fought for. The coups were plotted and executed based on religion and ethnic coloration and till today, the fruits of those ignoble actions are being reaped by Nigerians. Apart from the coups, this generation destroyed the commonwealth of Nigeria and positioned us for the breaking point of today
