The Northern Elders Forum has publicly expressed its disappointment in the Buhari's administration. The powerful elite group also regretted working against former President Goodluck Jonathan. The powerful group may be sincere in its explanation and expression, but Jonathan needs to avoid one particular mistake. He shouldn't even be carried away by the assessment of the group.
Recall that the 2015 presidential race was specifically between Mr. Goodluck Jonathan and President Muhammadu Buhari. But Buhari was almost totally favoured by the northerners and it would be difficult to win the presidency without recording victory in the vastly large northern region. Buhari was declared winner and Jonathan accepted the results and moved on.
This wouldn't be the first time there would be a revelation that the northern leaders worked against Jonathan in 2015. Mr. Babangida Aliyu, a former Niger State governor, openly said that northern governors didn't give their support to Jonathan. It was shocking that even PDP leaders in north didn't provide enough support to Jonathan who strived hard to help the region.
Mr. Jonathan should know that the confession of the northern elders at this moment may be to drive him to contest for the 2023 presidential election. And Jonathan would make a serious mistake if he joins the contest for the office of the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The statement made by the northern elders shouldn't move the former president to then think that he would be supported again.
It would be recalled that the All Progressives Congress has made some statements that show the party really wants to have Goodluck Jonathan. It is good for him to be more relevant, but it would be a mistake for Jonathan to leave the PDP let alone to contest again.
The northern governors and elders can't deny the fact that power should return to south in 2023. There is no doubt about that, but the region and its leaders may not want to stay till 2031. The leaders may want to stay beyond 2023 or take over again in 2027, four years after Buhari's administration.
Hence, majority of the northern leaders may want a southerner who can only spend maximum of four years in power. And the only southern politician who can't spend more than four years now is Goodluck Jonathan. Remember that he was in power from 2010 to 2015. He can't spend more than four years again.
The northern leaders may have done their calculation. And they must have realised that lots of things would happen if power is retained in north. Therefore, the alternative is to go for Goodluck Jonathan. And Jonathan should understand that it would be a mistake for him to go for it because south would lose the chance to hold power for eight years.
