[Opinion] Battle For The 2023 Presidency, And Why Zoning Shouldn't Be Considered By Any Party

It is arguable that the issue of the region where the next President of Nigeria should come from, has remained one of the most keenly debated issues in recent times. Recall that the Southern region has continued to insist that the 2023 Presidency should be zoned to the region. At the same time, the Northern region is equally insisting on taking hold of the Presidency come 2023.

There is no doubt that the two regions have been able to present valid arguments that are capable of convincing anyone that indeed, the 2023 Presidency should be zoned to the region. But the big question is, should region be the basis for electing a President of Nigeria? Obviously the answer to this question is a no. As such, I am of the view that no political party in the country should consider zoning the 2023 Presidency to a particular region.

Considering the current challenges that the country is facing, what Nigerians truly need at the moment is for the country’s best hands to take over the nation’s affairs. Arguably, meritocracy, which we are in dire need of, is one thing that the rising agitations for zoning of the 2023 Presidency to a particular region, could deny the country. As such, there is the need to do away with issues of zoning.

All hands should rather be on deck to ensure that our best hands capable of improving the quality of life of an average Nigerian emerges in 2023. Zoning can be argued to be a recipe for the emergence of someone who may not really have in his arsenal, solutions to the numerous challenges confronting the country. As such, it is my view that zoning is not in the best interest of Nigeria, and should not be considered by any political party in 2023.

The system should be open for everyone to contest irrespective of region or religion. Let the electorates freely choose the leaders of their choice. In my view, what Nigerians should pray for is a leader with a heart of gold, who has the knowledge and capacity to transform the country for good. Arguably, this cannot be guaranteed by zoning the Presidency to a particular region. As such, I am of the view that zoning should not be considered by any political party as it is not the solution to leadership ineptitude.
