Goodluck Jonathan Lands In Mali For Another International Assignment

Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has arrived in Bamako, the capital city of Mali, for a peacekeeping mission.

The former president disclosed this on his verified Facebook page on Sunday, September 5, 2021.

He said: "In Bamako with the ECOWAS Mediation Team to follow up on the progress of Mali's transition programme.

We are optimistic that the continuing dialogue and engagement within the population will deepen the process for the peaceful conduct of scheduled elections and a return to constitutional order."

Jonathan was appointed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in 2020 as a special envoy to mediate for peace in Mali following the violent protests that erupted in the country. The protesters demanded the resignation of the country's democratically elected president.

The situation escalated after the military ousted the president in 2020. ECOWAS and other international organizations have pressurized the military to return power to the civilian administration. The military has finally agreed and Jonathan and his team are in the country to oversee the process.
