How Wike Unknowingly Made Comments That Suggest He May Be Interested In Contesting For President

There have been speculations that Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State is nursing presidential ambition in 2023.

By 2023, Wike would complete his second term in office as Governor. The speculation that he is interested in contesting for President has been on and it became more serious when he joined forces to push for the removal of the National Chairman of his party, Prince Uche Secondus. Since then, many people see Wike as making efforts to ensure that a Northerner takes over as the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, so as to pave way for him to get the presidential ticket. This is because the party will then zone it to the South if a Northerner emerges the National Chairman.

How Wike made comments that suggested he may be interested in the post.

Wike for the first time openly backed rotational presidency also known as zoning. By doing that, Wike publicly supported power shift to the South ahead 2023 presidential election. He reacted to the decision taken by the Northern Governors Forum who kicked against zoning and power shift to the South in 2023. According to a report by The Punch, Wike said that zoning will restore peace in Nigeria.

Also, Wike defended the idea of zoning from a legal and constitutional perspective. In this regard, Wike admitted that zoning may not be constitutional, but that the constitution recognizes equity. After all, the three major tests of good judgment or justice in law are to check if the decision is in line with Natural Justice, Equity and Good Conscience. In this regard, Wike argued that since zoning promotes equity, it should be embraced.

Moreover, no region should ignore others and do something that favours it alone. Doing so will make others to feel insecure, feel lack of sense of belonging and could fuel insecurity due to the feeling of ill-treatment or cheating by other regions. With that, Wike defended zoning and power shift with a view to making the Northern Governors and other leaders in that region see reasons to back power shift to South in 2023.

From the above points, Wike has openly backed the move for South to produce the next President despite the fact that the PDP is said to be planning to zone its presidential ticket to the North. Wike seems to be lucky again. The PDP zoning committee headed by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State just changed its initial plan to zone the post of National Chairman of the party to South (South West).

The committee has zoned the post of the National Chairman to the North which could also make the presidential candidate of the PDP to come from South. Wike may be instrumental in making this happen and he may even run for President as the signs are there.
