Edo Governor meets Buhari, demands for funds to set up ranches in Edo State to avoid open grazing

The Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, yesterday, visited President Muhammadu Buhari at the presidential villa, Abuja, where they had a meeting concerning open grazing in Edo State. Governor Godwin Obaseki addressed the issue and said that enacting laws on open grazing ban, will only cause a rift between farmers and herders within the state. Obaseki further stated that the best option would be establishment of ranches in Edo for people who are interesting in it, instead of open grazing.

Addressing the newsmen after their meeting, Obaseki said while most states in the South had enacted laws on the anti-open grazing ban as agreed, Edo was yet to do so, because the government wanted to ensure that it could enforce the law.

Governor Godwin Obaseki said he told President Buhari that, instead of enacting a law banning open grazing, the Edo people have demanded for fundings to set up ranches for individuals who are interested. Godwin Obaseki further stated that ranching is a private business, and also very expensive to maintain. However, with the supports and fundings from the Federal government, adopting this system of agriculture would be better than allowing open grazing within the State.
