Will Southern Politicians Accept Igbo Elders' Plea For The Presidency To Be Zoned To The South-east?

Undoubtedly, the zoning of the presidency has been one of the most talked about issues in Nigeria, as many regional groups and leaders are agitating for the presidency to be shifted to their region.

Furthermore, the 17 southern governors also joined the trend, in which they publicly declared that the south should produce the next President for equity to reign.

However, many northern leaders and politicians fire back and kick against the demands of the southern governors, in which they dig out history and give many reasons why zoning shouldn't be out into consideration in Nigeria.

In the news gathered today according to Punch Newspaper, the Igbo elders have made a plea to the South-South and South-West politicians to let the Presidency be zoned to the South East, since the politicians from their geopolitical state, Obasanjo and Jonathan, have become presidents of Nigeria.

However, the Igbo elders also give words of warning to politicians that don't want the presidency to be shifted to the south, not to expect any votes of South-East people if they don't stop what they are doing.

After this news, the first thing that came to my mind was, "will the South South and South-West politicians accept this plea?"

Firstly, 2023 may be the best year for Bola Ahmed Tinubu to rule Nigeria, concerning his age and health.

If he accepts the plea, there is a high chance that Igbos will want to complete their eight-year term, which may finally wreck his ambition, because he would have been older and unable to contest in the 2031 election.

Second, there is no place in Nigeria's constitution that recommends zoning, and producing a president shouldn't be something that we should be pleading for. Nigerians should be the ones to pick the best candidates.

Most of the Southern politicians that people believe to be interested in becoming president have never been president of Nigeria before, and I don't think they can let Igbo elders' ambitions kill theirs.

With all this, I don't think any southern politicians can accept the plea of the Igbo leaders, because being the President of Nigeria is a right of everybody, and there are many other geopolitical zones like the North Central and North West that haven't produced a president for a long time as well.
