Top Politician Ortom Endorsed Over David Mark Emerges Consensus Candidate For PDP National Chairman, What Next?

The politics of who becomes the next National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is playing out ahead of the national convention in October this year.

Earlier, a report by The Punch revealed that Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State is backing former Senate President, Iyorchia Ayu, for the post ahead of another Ex-Senate President from his state, Senator David Mark. Some insiders made it clear that Ortom was serious as he rooted strongly for Ayu to clinch the post. The latest development now is that Ayu has finally emerged the northern consensus candidate for the post.

The report added that Ayu emerged the consensus candidate after series of high profile meetings of key political leaders in the North which lasted for 72 hours. It would be recalled that the PDP had zoned the post to the North ahead of its national convention. But, what is the possibility that this decision to have Ayu as the consensus candidate will stand?

Will Ayu actually emerge unopposed at last?

This is where the issue lies. Politicians can be highly unpredictable. Although, more details as to the calibre and names of northern politicians that took part in reaching the decision are yet to emerge. But, there may be some dissenting voices in some quarters. This is because, the first report cited above had it that the camp of former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, rejected the idea of North Central producing the PDP National Chairman. Saraki's camp demanded that the zone would like to produce the President of Nigeria instead. In fact, there are speculations that Saraki is eyeing the number one post ahead of 2023 and the demand by his camp seems to support this.

Apart from Saraki, it was also reported that Mark had the endorsement of key PDP organs including the PDP Governors Forum, PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) and other organs of the party. In this regard, it means that even if Ortom was not backing Mark, he still has good backing from influential organs in PDP if he still insists on heading to the poll to slug it it with Ayu and others that may choose to contest.

Nevertheless, Ayu may emerge unopposed at last if Mark, Saraki's camp and others are part of the agreement that produced him as the consensus candidate for the North. In that case, it means that they would give up their ambitions to vie for the post and step down for Ayu. It will also work out well for Ayu if former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, Saraki and other powerful politicians with presidential ambition in 2023 back him too and if they do not play a spoiler against him.
