Following the recent adoption of direct primaries for political parties by the National Assembly, Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has asked that political parties be allowed to decide the mode of primaries in order to deepen internal democracy.

Governor Ortom gave his position on the issue when he spoke to newsmen today at Abuja thereby adding weight to the voices of those who are against imposition of direct primaries for political parties.
The Governor said to conduct direct primaries costs a lot of money, stressing that direct primaries does not guarantee internal democracy. He added that one of the benefits of indirect primaries is that it provides aspirants the opportunity to interface with delegates where they know themselves more.

Governor Ortom who is the leader of the PDP North Central commended the National Assembly for reversing its earlier decision on electronic transmission of election results where it has allowed INEC to decide on mode election results transmission, adding that Nigeria is ripe for e-transmissions of election results.
