Buhari leaves for UN General Assembly in New York

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retired), will leave Abuja on Sunday, September 19, 2021 for New York, United States of America, to participate in the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The president's special adviser for media and publicity, Femi Adesina, revealed this on Saturday in a statement titled "President Buhari attends United Nations General Assembly in New York."

According to the statement, "Buhari will address the Assembly during the general debates on Friday, September 24, when he speaks on the conference theme 'Building resilience through hope - To recover from COVID-19 , rebuild sustainably, meet the needs of the planet, respect human rights and revitalize the United Nations ”, and other global issues.

“During the Assembly, the Nigerian leader and members of the delegation will participate in other important meetings such as; The high-level meeting to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the adoption of the Durban Declaration and Program of Action on “Reparations, Racial Justice and Equality for People of African Descent”.

“The delegation will also participate in the Food Systems Summit; High level dialogue on energy; and The High-Level Plenary Meeting to Commemorate and Promote the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.

Buhari will also hold bilateral meetings with several heads of delegations and heads of international development organizations.

He will be accompanied to New York by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama; Attorney General and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami; and Minister of State for the Environment Sharon Ikeazor.

Also part of the President's delegation are: National Security Advisor Major General Babagana Monguno (retired); Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ahmed Abubakar; Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission Chair Abike Dabiri-Erewa and Senior Special Assistant to the Chair on SDGs Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire.

The president is expected to return to the country on Sunday, September 26.
