Independence Day is an official national holiday in Nigeria, celebrated on the first of October.

It marks Nigeria's proclamation of independence from British rule on 1 October 1960.  

This is the national day of Nigeria and is always celebrated on October 1st.

On this day in 1960, Africa’s most populous country (with over 200 million inhabitants) became a sovereign republic, an anniversary commemorated as Nigeria’s Independence Day.  

Many aspects of modern life in Nigeria were established under the period of British Rule, but by the middle of the 20th century, the call for independence sweeping across Africa and the decline of the territories in the British Empire led to Nigeria being granted independence on October 1st 1960 under a constitution with a parliamentary government and a degree of autonomy for the country's three regions.

Independence day celebration is always a big event in Nigeria, it's a national day that despite the struggles Nigerians are going through, they don't cease to celebrate independence day.

In Nigeria, independence day is celebrated in churches, Tourism centers, bar and restaurant, event center and it is celebrated by everyone, both rich and poor.

Independence day is not gender or class specific.

This year's independence day was celebrated in Abuja by the president of the federal republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, His Vice President Osinbajo and others participates at the 61st Independence Anniversary Ceremony in Abuja on 1st Oct 2021.
