House Of Reps Majority Leader, Doguwa Granted N500m Bail

Alhassan Ado Doguwa, the embattled majority leader of the House of Representatives, was granted bail by the Federal High Court in Kano, presided over by Judge Muhammad Nasir Yunus, on Monday afternoon in the amount of N500 million and two trustworthy sureties in the same amount. Doguwa is on trial for alleged criminal offences including culpable homicide, criminal conspiracy, unlawful possession of a firearm, and breach of public peace. When he was first brought before Kano Magistrate Court 54, he entered a not-guilty plea.

His attorney, Nuraini Jimoh, SAN, requested the defendant's admission on bail at the Federal High Court in Kano on Monday, saying that his client is assumed innocent following Section 35(6) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. In his decision on the application, Judge Nasir Yunusa, the presiding judge, allowed the legislator N500 million in bail along with two trustworthy sureties, one of whom must be a first-class emir and the other a prominent civil servant. In a similar vein, the court mandated that Doguwa turn in his foreign passport to the Court Registry. The court also prohibited him from contacting his supporters ahead of the upcoming March 11, 2023 elections for the state House of Assembly and governor.
