With the outcome of the presidential election still occupying the front burner of public debate nearly two weeks later, renowned northern scholar, and activist, Dr. Shehu Mahdi has come out to question the veracity of the results announced by the Professor Mahmud Yakubu-led Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) which produced the APC's Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the winner of the hotly contested polls.
Speaking during an interview on ARISE TV's 'Prime Time' program with Charles Aniagolu a few hours ago, Dr. Shehu, who is an ally of the PDP's flag bearer, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, argued that the figures presented by INEC right from the voter registration process down to the collation of voting result did not add up in any way.
"INEC said that 93 million people registered to vote and they claimed eighty-seven million people collected their PVCs. Scandalously, they said 25 million Nigerians were eventually accredited. Now, between the time of accreditation and voting, they came out to claim that only 24 million people voted. Therefore, between one to two hours, over three hundred thousand people did not vote. You then begin to ask, where did these people disappear to? Were they abducted by bandits, or they all died before the voting started? Yet, all we have gotten from INEC regarding these questions is nothing but inordinate silence.
Then, when you say that democracy is a game of numbers -not a minority, but a majority number, we have to look at the total number of people who voted in the election. Let us do some simple arithmetic. If 24 million people voted, and from that number, sixteen million were a combination of PDP and Labour Party votes. You then said that the man who was declared the winner won the election with 8 million votes. In a country of over 215 million Nigerians, how can INEC tell us that only four percent of the people made Tinubu the winner of a national election. And you call him a democratically elected president? Look, INEC can tell people whatever story they want to tell them but only time will tell if this lie will stand."
