Opinion: Why Umahi Should Decamp to APGA Now That APC May Have Zoned Its Presidential Ticket to The South West

The Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi appears to be fast coming to terms with the fact that the All Progressives Congress has no plan to cede its presidential ticket to the South East contrary to his expectations.

This has become a major source of frustration to the Governor, who left the Peoples Democratic Party for the same reason.

Just recently the Governor was asked on Channels TV about the possibility of the APC zoning the presidency to the South East, which could have aided his ambition, his response was rather subdued. He said that he will be in pain if the party does not zone the Presidency to the South East.

Yet, if feelers emanating from the ruling party are anything to go by, the South East will not get APC's presidency, the odds increasingly favour the South West.

Based on this reality, what can Umahi do to salvage his presidential ambition? In my opinion, he should decamp to the All Progressive Grand Alliance. Here are my reasons.

APGA has no presidential candidate yet

I don't think he can return to PDP because there is already too much bad blood between him and the party as a result of his recent comments. More so, PDP appears to have already zoned its presidential ticket to the North. So in my view, moving to APGA will make a lot of sense, seeing that the party has no presidential candidate.

More so, Governor Umahi's path to the APGA's presidential ticket will be without stress and hassles as he will not require a primary election to emerge as the party's representative in the presidential election.

APGA is well-positioned to drive the Igbo presidency project

Since Umahi is so enthusiastic about the Igbo Presidency project in 2023, his partnership with APGA will make a lot of sense. The reason is that the founding fathers of APGA created it as a symbol of Igbo identity, but with a national appeal. In essence, APGA was created to give the Igbos a pride of place in national politics. And this resonates with Umahi’s desire to fly the South East flag in the coming Presidential election.

More so, Umahi's defection to APGA will make the party even stronger and deepen its national appeal because the Ebonyi state Governor is media-friendly and recognised across the country.

So the ball is in Umahi’s court, he could decide to stay put in APGA and watch his presidential ambition go up in flames or he could take a step of faith to APGA and rally the region behind his course as an Igbo ambassador in national politics.
