The People's Democratic Party (PDP) will soon set up its campaign committee for the Ondo State gubernatorial election. It has already appointed Senator Ike Ekweremadu to head the primary election committee for the same purpose.
But one thing is very clear: the party has to be very careful with whom it will appoint to be in charge of the of the campaign so the chances of the party won't be in jeopardy. Choosing any politician who has no credibility in the public opinions will only hamper the success of the party. There is a lesson to learn in Edo State.
The first option before the PDP is the Oyo State governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde. There are six states in the southwest region including Ondo and Oyo. But of all the states, only Oyo State is being controlled by the PDP. And that means Seyi Makinde is the leader of the party in the region.
As a leader of the PDP in the southwest geopolitical zone, Seyi Makinde should head whatever happens there. He has locus standi to deal with whatever issues that arise in the region.
Apart from that, one of the most popular governors in Nigeria is Seyi Makinde. He has been riding on the crest of his popularity since his landslide victory in the 2019 governorship election in which he defeated Mr. Adebayo Adelabu and the then ruling All Progresives Congress (APC).
The popularity of Makinde extends beyond the shores of Oyo State and his presence in Ondo State politics will boost the morale of PDP members and enhance their chances of winning the 2020 governorship election.
The second person that the PDP should consider is Mr. Ayodele Fayose. The man is fearless and courageous and he has been a very loyal chieftain of the PDP. His contributions to the PDP can't be overemphasize even after he left power as the Ekiti State governor.
Ekiti State is also one of the six states of the southwest region. Ekiti State used to be part of the old Ondo State. Both Ondo and Ekiti states used to be a state with capital in Akure. To make it more understandable, Ekiti State shares boundaries with Ondo State and they share lots of things in common.
As a former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose understands Ondo State politics better. He knows what happens there and can make things happen with his rhetoric and charisma.
Mr. Ayodele Fayose has been able to face and challenge the APC and the current administration. He knows when and how to raise alarm and call the public attentions to irregularities and malfeasance going on. This is a type of person the PDP now needs.
Both Seyi Makinde and Ayodele Fayose have what it takes to influence the voters to cast their votes for the PDP and its candidate. The PDP shouldn't just bring an individual who doesn't understand the language and politics of Ondo State.
Who is the better candidate? Who should be chosen?
