Two Reasons Tinubu Shouldn't Underrate Northern Politicians

Bola Ahmed Tinubu shouldn't try to underestimate the northern politicians who have shown to be highly tactical in their political dealings. There are two reasons the former Lagos State governor shouldn't underrate them as he looks forward to actualising his own dreams.

Tinubu has enjoyed so much recognition and support from top and key northern leaders. It was surprising to see strategic leaders of the region traveling to far away London to check the former governor. Umar Ganduje, Kashim Shettima and top federal lawmakers were there. But that doesn't mean Tinubu should relax and believe that everything is settled.

The first reason is that the common interests of northern region would surely be protected by the leaders and politicians of the region. The last meeting of the northern governors had placed the north at the position of contesting for the seat of the president. They rejected the position of the southern governors over zoning formula.

And to the amazement of southerners, the People's Democratic Party threw open the race for its ticket for the 2023 presidential election. The political party must have understudied the situation of things on the political arena. Hence, the party chose to be neutral.

The All Progressives Congress may follow this pattern most especially if the northern leaders mount pressure on the political party. Some APC leaders from the region have opposed the idea of power rotation. Mr. Abdullahi Adamu, Mr. Yahaya Bello and a top politician from Zamfara, Ahmed Sani Yerima, have opposed the idea.

The second reason is that the northern leaders are worried about the shocking decision of some southern governors. And they would surely react to protect their interests. The issue of Valued Added Tax remains a burning matter, and north isn't ready to give up.

The matter all started when Mr. Nyesom Wike came up with an argument that Rivers State Government would be collecting VAT. Majority of northern states rely so much on the taxes, which are received and shared by the federal government.

The northern governors talked about it when they met and they rejected the development. Now the north would be sceptical about southern presidency. It is quite understandable. The leaders would think that if a southerner becomes president, VAT matter may favour south.

Tinubu should be on the lookout so that he won't be caught unprepared. It is good to work with the northern leaders, but when it comes to issue of power, northern elite don't joke, and they mean te business.
