Buhari to order Sowore's release before Christmas

A Coalition of Civil Society Groups has given President Muhammadu Buhari a 14-day ultimatum to release Omoyele Sowore and all prisoners of conscience.

A group of rights organizations, including Amnesty International, Center for Democracy and Development, Transition Monitoring Group, Enough Is Enough, Concerned Nigerians, Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre and others called in a statement for "the unconditional release of Sowore per his bail terms" within 14 days.

In their statement, they demand that "If the demands are not honoured within 14 days, we call on patriots across Nigeria to join us as we occupy the National Human Rights Commission offices across the country as it is legally mandated to protect Nigerians and also report to the Presidency."

U.S. senators Bob Menendez and Corey Booker of New Jersey, where Sowore's family is based, have both expressed outrage over Sowore's detention.

The re-arrest has generated a lot of international heat on the stand of the Buhari-led administration on the rule of law.

It is highly feasible that Sowore will regain his freedom and will be able to spend the Christmas with his family.
