Ex-Edo speaker, Garuba dies of Covid-19

The death has occurred of a former Speaker of Edo State House of Assembly, Zakawanu Garuba. Garuba who was the spekaer of Edo State House of Assembly between 2007 and 2009 died of Covid-19 complications in Abuja on Saturday.

Family sources said Garuba, who was diabetic took ill and was diagnosed of Covid-19 about a week ago. But he could not survive the illness.

the news of his death threw his hometown into mourning mood. Many markets in the Edo north city were closed on the announcement of the death, while his country home was besieged by sympathisers.

After leaving the House of Assembly, Garuba, who was a lawyer, was appointed into the Board of the Securities and Exchange Commission as Executive Commissioner, Finance and Administration.

Born on 23 August 1965, in Akpekpe community, Auchi, in Etsako West Local Government Area of the state, the late Garuba studied Law at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State and was called to Bar in 1990.

He was elected into the Edo State House of Assembly in 2003, on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, and became the Speaker of the House in 2007.

Frank Okiye, the present Speaker of Edo State House of Assembly had recocered from Covid-19 attack, two months ago.
