Following a recent report from Sahara Reporters that the UK has promised to grant asylum to members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB, the group in another development said they need referendum and freedom from Nigeria, not asylum.
According to the report, the group states that its victimised members do not want asylum from the British government but freedom and referendum which they say will accord a sovereign Biafran nation to its members. However, it was gathered that the Igbo National Council (INC) on Monday claimed that “the United Kingdom wanted to appease the Igbo people, over the wrongs done to them,” the report confirmed.
This development was made known by the INC President, Chilos Godsent in Owerri, Imo State, while reacting to the report that the United Kingdom was planning to grant asylum to alleged persecuted members of IPOB and MASSOB.
Meanwhile, in another development earlier today Tuesday, the IPOB in a statement through its media and publicity secretary, Emma Powerful thanked the British government for its kind gesture but had declined the offer to grant asylum to its members who are being hunted by the Nigerian government.
Emma powerful was quoted saying “We the global family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), ably led by our great and indomitable leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has noted with satisfaction the news that the United Kingdom has agreed to grant asylum to persecuted Biafra agitators resident in the UK.”
Speaking further about what the group wants to achieve from Nigeria, they said “We are tired of living in bondage in the devilish contraption called Nigeria they single-handedly created.”
