Governor Ugwuanyi May Soon Show Interest In The Ongoing VAT Saga

It is no longer news that the Lagos and Rivers State governments have been in a form of squabble with the Federal government over their recent decision to impose and collect VAT (Value Added Tax) in their states.

Recall that the House of Assembly in both states had earlier passed the VAT bill as a law after it was discovered that the power to collect VAT isn't included in the federal exclusive list, thus state governments are in the best position to collect the VAT before the Abuja Appeal Court eventually interfered on the matter and halted both state governments from implementing the law.

In the same vein, the Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS) had sued both state governments for trying to deter it from collecting VAT only for Lagos and Rivers State governors, (Sir Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Nyesom Wike) to drag them to the Supreme Court over the issue.

Away from that, this article is meant to highlight one Southeast governor that may soon show interest in the VAT collection saga.

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu state has long been one of the most active governors in the Southeast in terms of political engagements. Talking about political activeness, Governor Ugwuanyi is among if not the only Southeast governor that has never missed the three Southern governors meetings that have been convened this year.

Ugwuanyi is also the first Southeast governor to sign the anti-open grazing law in his state and enforce it. Moreover, there hasn't been any report that Ugwuanyi has countered the resolution of the Southern Governors Forum (SGF), unlike most of his colleagues in the Southeast have done. At this juncture, it's factual and evident to say that the governor may decide to show interest in the ongoing VAT saga in the future.

This is however coming hours after the Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde showed interest to join Governor Wike and Sanwo-Olu on the VAT war against the federal government.
