Governor Seyi Makinde may not have it really easy when he is seeking a second term mandate from the people of Oyo State. There are two sure issues he is going to face ahead of the Oyo State gubernatorial election. And the unfortunate thing there is that he may not be able to overcome the two issues.
The victory of the People's Democratic Party in the last governorship election didn't just come on a platter of gold. Some little political parties formed alliance with the PDP and came together to work for the interest of the PDP and Seyi Makinde. The outcome of their union was the success of Makinde in the election.
Meanwhile, issues started to arise almost immediately after Makinde began his government. And most of the matters have been expanded right now. According to the Nigerian Tribune, a faction of the PDP in Oyo State passed a vote of no confidence on the state governor. This development is coming ahead of the PDP congress in the state.
Though it may be argued that the faction is inconsequential, the fact is that Makinde would have issues within the People's Democratic Party in Oyo State and there may be glitches to his second term bid. The vote of no confidence which was passed on him was highly symbolic.
The Oyo State governor would rely on the support of a former deputy governor Taofeek Arapaja, who is now the PDP chairman in the southwest region. As a matter of fact, Arapaja would pull strings for Makinde. However, there would be issues for Mr. Makinde within the PDP and he may not be able to come out victorious in the matter.
The second issue is far beyond what Makinde can control. The Oyo State governor will face some stiff resistance or opposition from the resurgent All Progresives Congress. The political party left power in 2019 and it was painful that it couldn't hold on to power beyond that time. But the party would want to come back more powerfully. And it would be an issue for the state governor, Seyi Makinde.
The APC leadership took a step recently. And it is clear that the party is really after the governor's seat at Agodi Area, Ibadan. The leadership went to meet Mr. Rasheed Ladoja with a view of wooing him into the All Progressives Congress. It showed the party wants to do everything to claim power in Oyo State.
Mr. Makinde would face issues from Mr. Sunday Dare, the minister of youths and sports. He will want to push the APC to power and he will enjoy the support of Bola Tinubu. Likewise, Mr. Alao Akala is in Ogbomosho. That means the Ogbomosho town would be tougher for Makinde.
