One smart move Atiku took that may help him emerge next President

The 2023 presidential election in Nigeria is less than two years, influential political players in the two major political parties in the country have been working underground to fly the flags of their parties and take over the baton of leadership from President Muhammadu Buhari.

On the platform of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, some influential politicians like the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, have been tipped to fly the flag of PDP and emerge the next President of Nigeria.

The presidential ambition of Atiku Abubakar was doubtful when the southern governors influenced the zoning of the position of PDP's National Chairman to the northern region where Atiku hails from, a strategy that would have paved way for the zoning of the PDP presidential ticket to the southern region.

If the southern Governors succeeded in the agitation for the zoning of the presidential ticket to the south, it would have ended the presidential ambition of Atiku Abubakar who hails from the northern region.

However, Atiku was able to champion a smart move that saved his presidential ambition and now set to contest for the presidential ticket of PDP.

Available indicators have shown that the former Vice President championed the adoption of the recommendation of a committee led by Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State which suggested that the presidential ticket of the party should be thrown open.

Atiku and other Northern cabals in PDP were able to convince the National Executive Committee of PDP to adopt the recommendation of Governor Bala Mohammed which was eventually adopted by NEC in its meeting on Thursday.

A report by Vanguard showed that Atiku played a great role in the adoption of Governor Bala Mohammed-led committee report to throw the presidential ticket of the party open to every aspirant.

According to the report, before the PDP NEC meeting on Thursday, a group rooting for Atiku had assured the public that the group was not disturbed by the zoning report of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi-led committee. The group had revealed that they were confident the PDP NEC will adopt Governor Bala Muhammed-led committee recommendation and throw the presidential ticket open which eventually happened.

With this report, before the NEC meeting on Thursday, Atiku's group was confident the PDP NEC will adopt the recommendation of Governor Bala Mohammed-led committee report and throw the presidential ticket open.

This smart move the former Vice President took may likely help him to grab the PDP presidential ticket in 2023 because of his influence in the party and northern Nigeria.

Atiku has much influence in northern Nigeria and this may help him to grab the ticket of the party in 2023 because of the number of delegates from the 19 northern states that would participate in the PDP presidential primaries.

If Atiku can emerge as the PDP presidential candidate in 2023, he may likely win the presidential election.

Recall that Atiku contested the 2019 presidential election on the platform of PDP against the incumbent President, Muhammadu Buhari, and was able to poll a total of 11,262,978 votes representing 41.2% of the total votes cast.

The influence of Atiku in northern Nigeria and other parts of the country will make it easy for him to win the presidential election because President Muhammadu Buhari will not be contesting the election.
