2 Reasons The North Should Stop Boasting About Having The Population Needed To Win Elections

It is no longer a secret that the North and South have been at loggerheads over the issue of zoning the 2023 Presidency to a particular region. The debate concerning which region should produce the next President of Nigeria, has continued to attract the attention of people from different parts of the country.

It should be recalled that for a while now, there have been rising calls from the South, insisting that the 2023 Presidency should be zoned to the region. At the same time, the North is equally warning up to take advantage of its large population, to claim the number one office in the country.

Recently, a report by the Peoples Gazette, revealed that the Spokesperson of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has alleged that heaven will not fall if a Northerner is elected as president in 2023. He went further to boast about the region having the population needed to win elections in Nigeria.

There is no doubt that the North has the necessary population that is needed to win elections in Nigeria, as alleged by Hakeem Baba-Ahmed. However, when we consider several other factors in the country, one may not be wrong to say that for the following 2 reasons, the North should stop boasting about having the population needed to win elections.

1. The large population in the region is yet to be transformed into large number of taxpayers.

There is no doubt that the government cannot function effectively if the people do not pay their taxes. As such, the North having the largest population, but still generates the least Value-Added Tax (VAT), is arguably not something to be proud of.

2. The large population in the region should not be seen as only a tool for winning elections.

Arguably, boasting about having the population needed to win elections at a time when there is still a debate on who should collect VAT, could send wrong signal to people from the other region, making them believe that the usefulness of the large population in the North, is just for winning elections only.

When we consider the two points raised above, and the need to foster national unity, one may not be wrong to say that the North should stop boasting about having the population needed to win elections in Nigeria. Instead, the region should focus on how to take advantage of its abundance of human resources, and trigger development at all levels.
