Five Top & Powerful Politicians That Joined APC Within A Year

Anyone who thinks that the APC is diminishing in term of strength may need to have a rethink as happenings in politics have clearly shown that the APC is truly a favoured political party in Nigeria.

Leadership of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) needs to be seriously concerned as the APC continues to grow numerically and politically. The national chairman of the PDP, Mr. Uche Secondus had better study how the APC is soaring higher like an eagle.

There is an influx of heavyweights into the All Progresives Congress (APC). The strong politicians are gradually joining the party, mostly from the PDP ahead of the 2023 general elections.

It is pertinent to discuss some big names that have joined the All Progresives Congress since August, 2020 till now. And having discussed them, it will be clearer that the APC has come to stay in Nigeria.

A former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Yakubu Dogara is a national figure whose presence in the APC will further embolden the ruling party. He returned to the APC in August, 2020.

Actually, his defection shouldn't be surprising because he became the speaker of the house on the platform of the APC. He was elected as the member of the House from Bauchi State.

Mr. Dogara later left the APC for the PDP when preparations for the 2019 general elections were ongoing only for him to return to the same party (APC) a year after the said general elections.

Upon his return, the chairman of the APC caretaker committee, Mai Mala Buni took him to meet the president, Muhammadu Buhari, who welcomed the federal lawmakers.

And his return was effective as he helped the party win the bye-election conducted for the vacancy in the Bauchi State House of Assembly. The said bye-election was a litmus test between him and the incumbent governor Bala Mohammed.

The PDP must still be regretting the defection of Mr. Dave Umahi to the APC. The Ebonyi State Governor was one of the few leaders the PDP could look up to, but he eventually found his way out of the opposition party.

Even his defection from the PDP has made the party to become weaker in the Igbo land. Before his defection, the PDP convincingly dominated the geopolitical zone. The party was controlling 3 out of the five states there. The only APC governor then was Mr. Hope Uzodinma.

Mr. Iyiola Omisore had formed a close rapport with the APC in Osun State. He became an ally of the party during the 2018 governorship election of the state. So, when he joined the APC officially about three days ago, Nigerians were not really surprised.

He helped the APC to defeat the PDP and its candidate, Ademola Adeleke in the rerun. The election was initially declared inconclusive by the INEC. And the APC went to meet the Osun State politician to help in winning the poll.

He consented and he assisted the APC and its candidate, Mr. Gboyega Oyetola. And since that time Omisore has been linked to the APC, but he wouldn't pass comments on the matter. But while the APC is conducting the revalidation, Omisore officially came out to register as an APC member.

The PDP is weaker in Adamawa State as it lost one of its senators to the APC. Adamawa State should be one of the few states the PDP should have total control over. The state is being controlled by Umaru Fintiri and with that the party has its last presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, from that same state.

The senator representing Adamawa North, Mr. Elisha Abbo late last year left the PDP and said his goodbye to the party that made him. There are three senators from the state. And the implication of his departure included loss of at least a third of the state votes to the APC.

In Oyo State, the APC that came second in the last governorship election has gained more momentum with the presence of Mr. Alao Akala, a former governor of the state.

Mr. Akala joined the APC during the build-up to the governorship election in the state. He negotiated with Bola Ahmed Tinubu even though he (Alao Akala) was the candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP). He crashed his structure for the APC.

With his more serious efforts in APC now, the party poses a very serious threat to the incumbent governor Seyi Makinde of the PDP.
