The Tribune newspaper on Sunday reported that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has decided on how to zone its party and political positions.
The newspaper quoted a chieftain of the party, whose name it did not mention, as the source of its information.
The report disclosed that the party has zoned its chairmanship position to the North-Central region.
The party reportedly favors the South-East political zone for the position of national secretary.
Meanwhile, the party is yet to take a definite stand on the zoning of the presidential slot.
However, there are strong indications that the presidential ticket would most likely go to the southern part of the country.
The dilemma for the party is the push for it to take a definite stand on which particular geopolitical zone in the South should get the slot.
As things stand, the battle for the presidential ticket is a straight one between the South-East and South-West.
Feelers indicate that the party might favor giving the presidential ticket to the South-West. The reason for such preference is that those canvassing it want the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, to succeed President Buhari.
Those pushing for the Vice President argue that having been a part of the power set up at the highest level since 2015, he should have the right of first refusal. They add that in advanced democracies, the Vice President is as good as a president in waiting.
The other reason for the preference for the South-West is Bola Tinubu.
As for the South-East, the contenders for the plum job are the Ebonyi governor, Dave Umahi, and the Chief Whip of the Senate, Orji Uzor Kalu. However, Umahi features in the equation more than Kalu.
In a fair contest, however, the South-West would floor the South-East because of its superior number of delegates. The APC has five states in the South-West against just two states in the South-East. But there are many aspirants from the South-West. And except they reach a consensus to present one contestant in the party primary, they could unwittingly give the advantage to the South-East.
The only thing that seems sure at the moment is that the APC's presidential candidate will come from the South.
