Opinion: 2 Big Risks Oshiomole Should Take Before APC Congress

The sacked national chairman of the All Progresives Congress (APC), Mr. Adams Oshiomole needs to take at least two political risks in order to stay relevant not only in the party, but also in the politics of the country.

He was removed from power in June, 2020 in a special meeting of the powerful organ of the APC, the National Executive Council (NEC). His removal was based on the litigations surrounding his suspension from the APC in Edo State. Recollect that he was first declared suspended from the Edo State chapter of the APC before he was eventually sacked by the NEC.

Since that time, the former national chairman has appeared out of reach with little or nothing heard about or from him. It is amusing that vociferous Adams Oshiomole could lay low and watch events from his home.

The party would soon conduct a congress to elect new executives for the party. One of the assignments given to the Mai Mala Buni-led caretaker committee is to conduct a congress. So, Adams Oshiomole needs to take some calculated risks.

The first risk that Oshiomole should take is to dissociate himself and detach himself from Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the self-styled leader of the political party. Though Tinubu might be there for Oshiomole when things were rough, Oshiomole should understand that it is all about interest.

Prior his removal, political analysts were of the view that with Oshiomole in power, Tinubu would pick up the APC ticket with ease and he (Tinubu) will face little or no challenge as Oshiomole would clear ways for him.

Oshiomole might not have issues within the party. But there were some forces that oppose Tinubu and would like to stop the former Lagos State governor. And rather than going for Tinubu, the forces faced Oshiomole and defeated him.

As a result of this, Oshiomole should simply move away from the circuit of Tinubu once and for all. At least the former national chairman has nothing to lose anymore.

The second risk he can take is to jostle for the national chairmanship of the party again. Yes, he should throw his hat into the ring for another time with or without any strong man's support.

A former governor of Borno State, Mr. Ali Modu Sheriff, has shown interest in the office. He said that he would contest for the job if it is zoned to northeastern Nigeria, where Borno State is located.

There are indications that the APC will favour northern Nigeria. There have been agitations for the presidency to go to southern Nigeria. And if that happens, the party will take its chairman from north.

Nevertheless, Adams Oshiomole should have a talk with the president, Muhammadu Buhari, the authentic head of the APC and discuss his plan to continue to lead the APC.

If the the president insists that the former national chairman shouldn't contest, Oshiomole should still go ahead. At least some top politicians will consider him and align with his decision.
