Members of Nigeria's political parties continue to make special efforts to field a viable candidate under the banner of their party to ensure that they succeed in attaining power from the current Nigerian president, Muhammadu Buhari, in the run-up to the 2023 general election.
Supporters of the main opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) have begun to take action, which could lead to a major upheaval in the party seeing how the Northern Youth Solidarity Forum (NYSF) has expressed opposition to state governors' leadership in the party where it demands the leadership of the party to take over the powers given to the governors. The group said that as long as the party's leadership rejected their demands, they should not expect the party to succeed in the 2023 presidential election. Mean, this could give a major victory to the APC which could be used to win the next election.
As stated by the President of Northern Youth, Abdulkadir Dantata, in Abuja during the PDP's national convention, he said, “We are very worried about the overbearing position of PDP governors in all the affairs of the party. We cannot forget in a hurry how the governors forced the former Governor of Borno State, Ali Modu Sheriff, on the party in 2016 and how the same Sheriff collaborated with the All Progressives Congress (APC) and suffered the party in a long period of legal battles. Thanks to the Supreme Court that saved the party in that landmark judgement; otherwise, that would have been the end of the PDP."
What is the solution for PDP?
Of course, this has been a major challenge for the PDP as the governors have gained so much power in the party that it will be difficult for the PDP leadership to take over their position. However, dissatisfaction with the NYSF's demands could lead to conflict and divisions within the party, given the significant contributions made by young people that it has received from senior citizens. Furthermore, the emergence of a crisis in the party could result in a huge loss for it, which in turn would allow the APC to win the election without any challenge.
