Just as Allah has favoured women in Islam in every aspect of life so as He has favoured certain times of year with multiplication of reward, expiation of sins, promotion of rank, and admittance into His Gardens. Muslim woman must learn the provisions of fasting; its obligations, its Sunnah and its manners so that her fasting be correct and accepted by Allah Almighty.
Ramadan is the month where many Muslims will strive to put in their best efforts to be close to Allah s.w.t., mainly by fasting. Indeed, every form of worship which is valued highly in the sight of Allah s.w.t. will come with a set of tests and challenges. For ladies especially, this fasting month will bring with it its own set of challenges. One of the greatest challenges perceived by many ladies is the inability to fast and recite the Quran due to menstruation or post-natal bleeding.
Fasting is obligatory to every Muslim sane woman, settling (not traveling), able (not sick), free from all the prohibition of fasting such as menstruation and postpartum. According to the Qur’an, pregnant women, or those who are breast-feeding or menstruating, have been given a reprieve by God to abstain from the holy obligation meant to teach sacrifice, humility, patience, and a means to feel closer to God.
Ahead of Muslims around the world is such a time, the blessed month of Ramadan, in which the Qur’an was revealed, on its greatest night, Laylat al-Qadr, which is better than one thousand months as stated by Allah (SWT).
During Ramadan, Muslims fast between sunrise and sunset, not consuming food or drink. However, when a woman is menstruating she cannot fast. Muslim scholars have stated that observing the fast is forbidden for menstruating women. However, when a woman's period has ceased, she must bathe and continue fasting. Any fasts broken or missed due to menstruation must be made up whenever she can before the next month of Ramadan. So every Muslim women should take the remaining days of Shaban to make up their missed fasts for the previous year's Ramadan.
